communication

She was small in stature, delicate in frame. Her thick, sun-bleached hair fell far below the waistline of her pink-and-white striped sundress. She seemed to stare off in the distance mostly, dreaming of far off places and unknown adventures. Quietly beside her, this little child’s mother sat with determination and protection. Fingers intertwined, they sat silently for a time; their peace interrupted only by the casual buzzing of noon-day flies.

The air was thick, breeze refreshing, and shade welcoming. As leaves rustled gently around them, the two leaned silently against the rough bark of a juniper tree. It was here that they found comfort in one another’s presence, here that they could rest.

And although no words were spoken during this time, gentle reciprocated embraces assured both that they were loved. And although tears came to their eyes, this was not a moment of anguish or sadness. Rather, it was a time of healing and refreshing, a time of silent yet powerful communication.
