I was in a wedding on Friday; I was the maid of honor. I received a call on Thursday around 8:00 pm: my presence was requested in a wedding the following day at 3:00. It was strange in every sense of the term, but a part of me is still in awe over the union created by marriage. The girl getting married? A childhood friend with whom I've had no contact for over four years. She and I were in the same Sunday School class - we saw each other once a week. I graduated from high school almost six years ago and I've only seen her briefly since. Although instant cameras, double-wides, kitchens, crepe paper, and orange dresses do not signal a traditional wedding, I was honored to be a part of this occasion. Yes, I had my share of shock, laughter, and sadness, but it was sobering to see how much this meant to the few family members involved. It makes you stop and think ... did I really have enough influence on that person so as to warrant the place of sole female witness? Yes, this was as close to eloping as one can get without going to a justice of the peace, but, nevertheless, it mattered to the family. It mattered to the girl getting married and it mattered a great deal to the rest of the family. I am glad I was part of her ceremony. May the Lord bless you as you seek to live and serve Him together.
