desire

How are we to know when a desire is from the Lord or from our own human longings? Many things in life are good; indeed, many are profitable, but the right thing at the wrong time is wrong. The right thing by the wrong person is wrong and the right thing with the wrong desire is wrong. What, then, is right? How do we justify a desire? How do we test something knowing that it is good in and of itself?

The Lord gives us the desires of our hearts when we are following him and trusting in his guidance. I also know that not every desire is biblically based or grounded in the Word (at least not all of mine). In those situations, what is the litmus test? How do we pray? In what manner do we submit our inquiry to the Lord?

When do we move forward and say, “I know this will further the kingdom and it is my desire so I am going to do it?” When to we refrain and say, “I have not seen doors opened in this area, and although it is my desire, the Lord may be saying ‘no’ or ‘wait’?”

Some questions just don’t have easy answers…

I used to think "The Lord gives us..." meant that whatever we desired HE would give to us. More and more I am realizing it is the desires themselves that God gives us. It's like the "Ask anything in my name..." thing, as opposed to saying, "In Jesus name give me a million dollars." When we are close to God we are only asking for the things that are on HIS heart. "Doing the things we see the father doing." If we know God we know his desires and the he will give us the desires and the fulfillment.

Yes - knowing the Lord is the key.
